NBA Point Guard Russell Westbrook has bounced around from team to team quite a lot in the last several seasons. Since 2020, Westbrook has been with five different organizations. No matter what basketball court and city the future Hall of Fame calls home, there are some things you know you’re going to get with the explosive guard: his relentless energy every second he’s on the floor, his dynamic athleticism, and his commitment to the community where he’s residing. This Thanksgiving season, Westbrook has demonstrated his philanthropic spirit to his new Denver, Colorado home.
Westbrook donated $20,000 Epworth Foundation’s Daddy Bruce Feed-A-Family Thanksgiving Meal giveaway through his Why Not? Foundation.
The event hopes to feed 7500 families this year. Before opening his wallet, Westbrook donated his time and energy by volunteering in the Epworth United Methodist Church’s kitchen before the event.
Westbrook’s Why Not? Foundation is dedicated to empowering underserved communities, and this donation aligns with its mission.
“When I’m coming to a new place, I always want to connect with the inner city, you know, to serve,” Westbrook said. “For me, there was an immediate connection just based on the work they’ve done in the past and the work they’re doing, especially during the time of giving.”
Westbrook is focused on not only making an impact on the court with his new team, but also in the community. By supporting this initiative, he is flexing his charity muscles and giving back, particularly during the holiday season. This act of kindness reflects Westbrook’s character and his desire to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
“I’m grateful to be here, grateful for the opportunity,” Westbrook said. “I think it’s always important to give regardless of what you have. I knew that growing up — my parents always instilled that into me when I was growing up. Just regardless of how much you have, it’s always good to help and give to other people.”
Westbrook’s continued efforts to make positive influence in his communities, either in his hometown of Los Angeles or whichever city is housing him professional, has built his legacy as – not only an all time athlete, but an all time person.
