David Beckham

One of the most prolific and recognizable footballers in the world is approaching another milestone, but this one is occurring off the pitch. David Beckham, one of England’s best soccer players and international superstar, is turning 50 years of age. And with the half century mark approaching on May 2nd, the sports icon has decided to use this hallmark occasion to do some good for the world. He has launched a fundraising appeal for Unicef to support children in need across the globe.

“We are witnessing a global funding crisis where the most vulnerable children are suffering the most and urgently need our help,” Beckham said, in a statement posted to his Instagram. “Next month, I turn 50. It’s a major milestone that has made me think about the opportunities I’ve had and the experiences that have shaped me. As I look back, some of the moments that have had the most impact on me have come through my work with Unicef. As a father of four amazing children, I know how lucky my family is to be safe and have access to education and healthcare.”

Beckham has been a Unicef ambassador since 2005, supporting a variety of initiatives to protect children from violence, help promote education, and support vaccination efforts. Unicef has stated that the money from the fundraiser will go toward the children in the utmost need, and help them in some long term programs to aid them and their families. Unicef has been around since 1946, founded as a response to the damage WWII did to children and their mothers. To date, it has raised almost $6 billion dollars in public sector funds.

“So if you, like me, believe that every child should have the chance to achieve their full potential, please click the link in my bio to donate,” Beckham said. “Whatever you can give will make a difference to children’s lives. Every child deserves the chance to dream. Together, we can help to make those dreams a reality.”

Beckham is no stranger to philanthropic pursuits himself. In the past he has supported several organizations and charities including the Elton John Aids Foundation and the British Red Cross. Hard to believe Beckham is turning 50, and what better way to celebrate than to help children who need it the most. Happy birthday Mr. Beckham!
